TASK 8

GSB-GFO

The entity responsible: Central Mining Institute (CMI)

Entities implementing: Central Mining Institute  (CMI), Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences (WUELS),
Polska Grupa Górnicza (PGG)

The purpose of task 8 is to build the GEOPHYSICAL SAFETY SYSTEM FOR MINE SUPPORT PILLARS (GSBGFO). GSBGFO will enable the continuous geophysical monitoring in the area of the KWK Marcel support pillar. A support pillar is an area of the rock mass that contains important technical infrastructure. Damage or breakdown of the pillar results in the permanent confinement and impossibility of extraction of a number of coal seams deposited in its area, and it also poses a direct hazard to the health and well-being of the personnel stationed there. Surface infrastructure may also be at risk in such a situation. The GSBGFO system infrastructure will enable the continuous monitoring of the pillar's behaviour and will provide information as to its geodynamic metamorphoses in the form of digital databases, stored and managed at GIG’s Local Geophysical Data Centre, and subsequently delivered to the publicly available digital IS-EPOS platform.

The purchased and produced research infrastructure will make it possible to collect unique data sets describing the geodynamics of the support pillar in KWK Marcel, which is exposed to strong mining pressure. Observation systems and interpretation methods will be developed as part of the project.
